The Rose Parade is an annual parade held in Pasadena on New Year's morning. There are floats covered in flowers and other natural materials, marching bands, and more.
This year we volunteered to work on the 2019 Burbank Rose Parade float and also attended the Rose Parade.
It was a wonderful experience to see the parade in person for the first time after watching it on TV for so many years.
Many people camp out overnight on the streets of Pasadena to watch the Rose Parade in person. Since the parade is in January, spending the night outside can be cold.
People bring heaters to stay as warm as possible during the chilly night. A popular tradition is to throw tortillas with shaving cream and marshmallows at other people and cars.
We arrived to our Rose Parade bleachers around 6:00 AM, just as the sun was coming up. There was still two hours until the Rose Parade began, so the waiting began.
Cellphones are likely not to have service or be slow because of the large amount of people using their phones waiting to the parade to begin.
As the parade began many viewers on TV noticed a man who seemed to be on the phone using a banana. People say this was one of the funniest and best moments of this year's parade.
The parade began and we had a wonderful time. There were beautiful floats and wonderful marching bands from everywhere. Some areas the bands came from include Canada, Costa Rica, Japan, Puerto Rico, and Sweden.
Near the end of the Rose Parade one of the large floats caught on fire and was quickly put out. Luckily no one was hurt but the parade was held up a few minutes while they moved the large float.
Next year's Rose Parade will be on New Year's day as always, and the theme is yet to be announced.
